| In the early part of the 19th centuary
most baby feeding bottles were still made of earthanware or pewter, but
by about 1837 most were being produced in glass. Most of the earliest
of these were round and flat and connected to an india rubber
teat via a rubber hose.Although a long brush was provided with
these bottles they were still very difficult to clean properly
and earned themselves the nickname "murder bottles".There
were several variations patented after the murder bottle and
the word "hygenic"started to appear in advertisements
and on the bottles themselves. Most later feeders are hard to
date accuratly as they were still being hand produced by about
1917.An interesting aside is that miniature bottles turn up from
time to time in several styles, these are tiny and were actually
"toy" feeeders for childrens dolls. You will find one
bannana type amongst my collection though tiny "murder"
types also exist. |
