Stoneware was much in evidence in the
past and with the invention of transfer printing went from strength
to strength until its demise from about 1900 or so.This was probably
due to the high cost and time consuming manufacturing techniques
involved. However they have left us with a fascinating insight
of the shopping habits of our victorian forbears. Many collectors
delight in the many transfers and glaze variations to be found
on Ink,Bluing,CreamGinger beers,marmalade pots,Toothpaste or
pomade pots and the like.It is from these transfered wares that
we can find out most about are forbears shopping habits as they
often mention what the product was, where it was sold and for
how much, sometimes we find naughty claims of royal patronage(when
there was none) or claims of miraculous healing, cleaning or tasting
properties,an interesting reminder of times before trade description
acts and the like. |
